Benny and his wife Elena have been married twenty three years and live in Mission Hills, California. Benny is the father of six children.
Benito Benny Bernal was born in 1964 in the City of Los Angeles. His parents Benito and Victoria welcomed Benny into their family along with his other nine brothers and sisters. Yes, Benny is the youngest of ten, six of whom were born in Mexico. Benny’s Father was named after Benito Juarez and Benito Canales. His Grandfather Carmen Bernal fought alongside Juarez and Canales for the Rights of the People during the Revolution.
Benito SR was born in Paso Robles, California and Victoria was born in Kansas City, but were both raised in La Calera Michoacán, Mexico.
As Farm Workers Benny and his Brothers and Sisters worked with their parents picking cucumbers on Farms in Lodi, Modesto and Stockton California. They lived in Farm Labor Camps. When not working in the fields, the children were bused from the Haerney Lane Labor Camp to Lodi High School for elementary education during the picking seasons.
Benny attended Sharp Elementary School in Pacoima, Pacoima Middle School and San Fernando High School where he was Class President for two terms. He also attended Los Angeles Valley College in Valley Glen, California.
His work history spans many years; it includes picking cucumbers with fellow farm workers at an early age. He had a Paper Route with the Valley Green Sheet, riding his bicycle delivering papers. He was employed at the Gemco Store as a Box Boy and later to the produce department.
Benny is a Certified California Professional School Bus Driver and has been in the profession for almost twenty five years.
Benny was a member of SEIU Local 99. He served as the School Bus Drivers Union Steward, Labor Management Rep and sat on the Accident Review Board.
Benny was very involved in the Reform Efforts within the Union and served as its First Vice President once the local came out of Receivership with the intent to bring power back to the Rank and File Members.
Benny is a former Board member of the Los Angeles College Foundation Board.
He has served on the Arleta Neighborhood Council and was on the Executive Board of Valley Vote.
He has served on many Boards in the field of youth sports. He served as a Volunteer Coach at Arleta High School.
He volunteered and served at Mary Immaculate Church, Santa Rosa Church and the SIBL and Mission Hills Little Leagues.
He remains committed to serving his community.
